At the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we work primarily with student athletes* who are not only continuously developing their golfing skills but also developing as they grow (ages 10-18), and developing athletic ability. Getting the correct Swing DNA fitting is very important because it is necessary to compensate for current and future changes. Understanding the correct Swing DNA also  helps to ensure that as our student’s bodies change, they are not put at risk of injury due to misaligned fitting.

*Appointments are also available for adults and junior golfers. Please contact us to book an assessment.

As a Titleist National approved fitting centre, we not only have access to the years of research and development in fittings & golf research conducted by Titleist, but we also utilise technologies such as TrackMan and Smart2Move to ensure that each club fitting is bespoke to the requirements of each individual.

Our philosophy at the Jason Floyd Golf Academy is to provide the same fitting experience PGA Tour staff receive and experience the same process, equipment and technologies that the best players in the world rely on to improve their game.

During a fitting assessment at the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we will find out some information about your current performance, the golf balls and type of clubs you currently use.

TrackMan 4 provides us with a wide range of measurements that help us determine launch angle, spin rate, land angle, etc. Using dual radar and dual camera technology, the data captured during your assessment allows us to take a scientific approach to choosing the club head and shaft combinations that will work best with your body. Further testing helps determine club head, shaft, weight, lie and length that produces the highest shot quality and greatest consistency for your swing.

Not only do the right clubs add distance, they make you more accurate on the course increasing your on course performance. By concentrating shot dispersion and finding more, you’ll find it easier to navigate the course and to shoot more consistently with the benefit of better scores and being able to land your ball closer to the  hole.

Club Head Selection

The days when woods were literally made of wood and irons literally made of iron are all gone. Titleist golf heads available at the Jason Floyd Golf Academy come in an array of designs, weights, and materials to suit each individual.

Some of the main club head components during your assessment include:

  • Size/Shape: Size makes a difference when it comes to your swing, especially for drivers and woods. Club heads with higher cubic volume and larger sweet spots are typically more forgiving and give better control to make solid contact with the golf ball. For golfers who want to manipulate ball flight and hit different types and shapes of shots, choosing a club head with less cubic volume is a preferred choice.
  • Loft: The Angle of loft on a driver’s face is usually between 8 and 14 degrees. Assessment of how the ball is struck using analysis at the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, along with swing analysis all factor into making the correct choice. Slower swing speeds will need more loft in order to get the ball into the air (better hang time & longer shots), faster swings create a faster ball speed and create lift so they don’t typically require as much loft.
  • Lie Angle: Lie Angle is an important factor in improving dispersion patterns. The loft angle & lie angle work in conjunction to produce accurate shots. By moving the Lie Angle by 1 degree on a 7 Iron (and therefore tilting the face angle), it will move the ball by 7 yards! If loft and lie angles don’t match your physical makeup, the risk of missing your target, increases even with a perfect swing.

Shaft Selection

There are two big factors to consider with golf shafts: flex and length. Here’s how each of those works with your swing and can affect your on course performance.

  • Flex: There are five different types of flex, all designed for a specific ‘load’ factor. The ‘load’ is determined as the result of the club head speed vs time. Shaft selection is determined during your assessment based on the ‘load’ to determine the amount of flex required in the shaft to give consistent results.
  • Length: Having the proper length of your clubs is essential to making a good swing. Average male height is around 5’9”-5’10” so golfers outside of this range typical need an adjustment on length to ensure that their swing isn’t impacted by too much or too little length.

Grip Selection

Grip preference varies and it is often a matter of personal preference and how it feels for each individual. At the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we have the option to choose a wide range of Titleist grips to suit each preference and during your assessment we will advise to help you select the best choice for you.

Selecting correct grip will help create a faster swing, that also, in turn generates more speed and distance. It can also help reduce fatigue in the hands helping performance during the course of a tournament for example.

Conclusion

Fitting is a must for golfers who want to maximise every opportunity to excel in on course performance. You shouldn’t be doing all the work for the club, rather you want the club to work for you. Only by going through a fitting assessment can the recorded data give each individual clear information on what is the correct fitting for them.

The data doesn’t lie – better fit leads to a better game – club fitting is an essential element for every player and planning ahead for a fitting can lead to better on course performance by maximising the opportunity for the body to work in unison with your clubs.
