The first month of the new school term is over and our students have had time to settle in at the academy and at school. What may have been a daunting experience a few weeks ago has now turned into the experience to meet new friends, have fun and learn new skills.

At the academy we understand that starting a new year can bring a lot of changes that students have to deal with. From moving, taking on new classes, new subjects and content etc, students can often feel overwhelmed which, at times of stress, can lead to making bad choices in areas such as diet.

At JFGA we understand that food is an extremely important element to getting the best out of your performance. There are lots of options on offer regarding the foods that students can choose from but it’s important for them to know that making healthy choices leads to a better and healthier body and mind, allowing increased energy levels on the course and increased mental acuity when it comes to study.

Our KinetiX Athlete Golf Programme has been designed to offer students a bespoke training programme that is aligned to their golfing needs. The other factor that has a huge impact on physical performance is the nutritional choices they make, so we educate our students on how to make healthy choices and help them understand how the right mix of carbohydrates, healthy fats, proteins and nutrients can positively affect their training and on-course performance.

Ensuring a well balanced diet is maintained, hitting correct macronutrient targets, proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats can ensure solid focus and attention at the correct times without feeling the effects of drowsiness and fatigue. Daily energy requirements depend on body size, energy cost for training, body composition and daily living. For sporting individuals, a slightly higher focus on proteins and carbohydrates can improve recovery and muscular development.

Nutrition is often overlooked by the average golfer, but the effects on performance are so positive that it needs to become an important component of training. 18 holes can be mentally and physically draining on the best of days but when tournament pressure is added in, maintaining energy and mental clarity for an average of 4 to 5 hours is essential. Bogeys and shots late in the round can be attributed to low energy levels and dehydration. Combine this with starting a new school year and we can see why it’s so important to pay attention to the the nutritional requirements that are needed to succeed in golf and education.

Therefore, since it is one of the easiest factors to control and manipulate, eating correctly and making sure we are ‘nutritionally fit’ is one of the first things we should be looking at as long term goals to helping achieve better results both on and off the course.

This year we’ll be sharing some healthy recipes with our students which can help guide them better in their meal choices and also give them healthy options to make in their own time that will give them sustained energy on the course and a boost when they need it.
