Jack Nicklaus once said “I couldn’t control Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Watson or Lee Trevino. The only person I could control was me.”

What you think, where you think and when you think has a profound impact on how successful you are in pressurised situations.

Too much thought will interfere with the task, not enough thought will cause careless mistakes.

Here at the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we educate our students on the “Process Boxes” which help clarify and de-clutter the mind. These are techniques that any golfer can adopt to help increase performance on the course.

1. THINK BOX

Here you are taking into account everything that can effect the shot to come and formulating (decide) the best strategy.

Some of the factors which are important to consider include the lie, penalty areas, distance to the target, slope, wind, temperature, humidity etc.

Ultimately you are confirming what you want to do, before you do it.

At the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we have developed the PinPoint protocol as a forward thinking method to help the player select the most efficient target based upon their dispersion pattern.

For everyone in the golf game, we all know it’s a numbers game. By using PinPoint you can use probability to move your dispersion pattern in order to eliminate the big mistakes and optimise your scoring potential.

At the Jason Floyd Golf Academy, we use technology such as Trackman to determine each individuals dispersion pattern.

2. PLAY BOX

Following on from Think Box, you have now made the decision, it’s now time to execute the shot. Have a positive self talk message which allows you to free up and commit to the task that lay ahead.

A great way to commit to the shot is to start counting to 8 after your last practice swing to when you hit the ball. By doing this you can reduce overthinking. Clarity removes insanity.

3. POST BOX

Not the emotional phase; it’s the evaluation phase. What happened, why did it happen, what did I learn for next time?

A great tip is to only allow yourself 5 seconds or 5 steps to focus on what happened before moving on. The most important shot is the one that is next!

Between shots, some of the things to think about that can affect your game:

Body language  – how are you holding yourself and how do your competitors see you? Negative body language not only affects your game but could indirectly benefit your opponents.

This outlines the key principles of the process boxes; it is a system that you can trust and repeat time after time so that when you are faced with a tough, pressurised situation you will not react emotionally, but you will act with clarity.
